SWE Scholarship Program for Women in Engineering

The SWE Scholarship Program offers financial aid to women who want to pursue careers in engineering, engineering technology, or computer science enrolled in community college, bachelor, or graduate programs.

Level/Field of Study

SWE offers one application for freshmen and one for sophomores through graduate students. After submitting an application, candidates are reviewed for any scholarships for which they qualify.

The Society of Women Engineers works to acknowledge the accomplishments of SWE members, honor the achievements of women at all stages of their careers, and advance women in engineering.

Criteria for SWE Scholarship Program

Key qualifications:

  • only female candidates who self-identify as such.
  • Applicants for undergraduate or community college programs must have plans to enrol in an ABET-accredited course of study in engineering, technology, or computer during the following academic year.
  • A university’s engineering, computer, or technology programs must be ABET-accredited for master’s and PhD applicants to be admitted or enrolled there.
  • You must intend to enrol full-time (exceptions are made for reentry and non-traditional applicants).
  • You must lack sufficient funding for tuition, fees, books, or something comparable.
  • A minimum of 3.0 GPA for sophomore through PhD and 3.5 GPA for freshman
  • No minimum GPA for re-entry students.

For schools and universities in the US and abroad, accredited programs are based on ABET accreditation. The list of SWE-approved programs is the same as the list of ABET-accredited programs in engineering (EAC), computing (CAC), and technology (TAC). Visit abet.org to learn more.

SWE members and non-members are welcome to apply for scholarships through the SWE Scholarship Program, though some of the awards require membership. Read about the advantages of joining SWE.

Timeline for the SWE Scholarship Program

Scholarships are often given out in May to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students as well as undergraduates for the next academic year. In September, scholarships are paid out. In September, recipients are also declared.

Sophomore year and up: Applications are now being accepted and are due February 15, 2024. By February 22, 2024, reference letters must be submitted.

Freshmen: The application period begins on March 1 and ends on May 2, 2024. The deadline for reference letters is May 9, 2024.

The timing for all deadlines is 5:00 p.m. central. There won’t be any way with the deadlines.

Scholarship Reward

Any scholarship by SWE is worth at least $1,000. While SWE can provide scholarships worth more than $1,000, the median amount for a single scholarship is between $1,000 and $5,000. The administrative fee for all scholarships is 10%.
