The school was established under the supervision of the University of Missouri in Columbia to take advantage of the Morrill Land-Grant Acts to “teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts, in such manner as the legislatures of the States may respectively prescribe, to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the various pursuits and professions in life,” according to the Morrill Land-Grant Acts.

Missouri received a federal land gift of 30,000 acres for each of its two senators and nine representatives at the time, for a total of 330,000 acres (133,546.26 ha; 515.62 sq mi). The endowment stipulated that the land could not be sold for less than $1.25 per acre and that a minimum endowment of $1,000 was required.

The $300 Million gift

The university received the greatest single gift to any university in Missouri, public or private, in October 2020. The Kummer Institute for Student Success, Research, and Economic Development was established with a $300 million bequest from June and Fred Kummer. The gift will also help Missouri S&T construct a new college of innovation and entrepreneurship, develop new research fields, provide scholarships and fellowships for students, and boost the economy of the Rolla region.
