Louisiana State University, also known as LSU, is a public land-grant research university in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Its full name is Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. Under the name Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy, the institution was established in 1860 not far from Pineville, Louisiana.
More than 250 buildings on the current LSU main campus were built in the Italian Renaissance style of architect Andrea Palladio and were dedicated in 1926. The main campus historic district is located on a 650-acre (260 ha) plateau along the banks of the Mississippi River.
The most comprehensive university in Louisiana, LSU serves as both the state’s flagship institution and the apex of the Louisiana State University System. The university had 14 schools and colleges with over 28,000 undergraduate and over 4,500 graduate students enrolled in 2021.
The E. J. Ourso College of Business and the Paul M. Hebert Law Center are two LSU graduate schools that have won recognition for their respective fields of study on a national level. Open to entering freshmen with a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, an SAT or ACT composite score of 1100 or above, and who graduated in the top 15% of their class. Financial needs and leadership endeavors are also taken into account.
The Minimum Foundation Program, or MFP, is a mathematical formula used by the Louisiana Department of Education to distribute funding to school districts. The funding is also known as “per-pupil” funding because it is allocated according to enrollment. Technically, each student receives a fixed, base amount from the state, which is $3,961 this year.
