The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship for international students wishing to enrol in undergraduate or graduate programs at German universities has opened for applications through the DAAD.
The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship opportunities are given to top-performing students and come with a thorough seminar program to help candidates improve their social and academic skills. An additional advantage of the sponsorship is the on-site liaison lecturer’s personal assistance. Up to 40 students are given FES sponsorships each year.
The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) was established in 1925 and is the oldest political foundation in Germany. It has a long history of fighting for the fundamental principles and values of social democracy—freedom, justice, and solidarity—while staying true to the legacy of its namesake.
The DAAD’s (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) primary duties include awarding scholarships, supporting German universities’ and research organizations’ internationalization efforts, enhancing German cultural and language studies abroad, and assisting developing nations in the establishment of successful higher education institutions.

Requirements to Apply for the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship
Application Requirement
- outstanding school or academic achievement (where required: first graded proofs of academic achievement)
- social and political involvement and commitment to social democratic values responsible, motivated, dependable individuals willing to join the Foundation’s network and sufficient knowledge of German, even if the courses are held in English
- Applicants are from the Global South (Asia, Africa, and Latin America), post-Soviet states, and eastern and southern European (EU) countries.
- Students in any subject are eligible to apply if they have excellent school or academic merit, wish to study in Germany, and are committed to and live by the values of social democracy.
For Basic Funding
- Proof of enrollment in a course at a state-sponsored or state-recognized German (technical) university for the program of study you wish to be funded.
- Foreign applicants must demonstrate adequate German language proficiency.
- German and international first-year students apply prior to or at the start of the first semester, and they require two teacher references for the rest of the application process.
For Doctoral funding
- Unconditional acceptance into the doctoral scholarship
- Foreign applicants must also demonstrate adequate German language skills.

Selection Process
Step 1: Complete their online application. They will ask you a few questions about your professional and family history; no other documents will be required at this time. If you have any questions or would like to speak with one of their 480 liaison lecturers before applying, please do so. (Please keep the deadlines and dates in mind!) You can get a sample here. Step 2: If you are eligible for a scholarship, FES will send you an e-mail requesting additional documents: two expert reports from university teachers, as well as information about your previous education and socio-political commitment. In their first semester, first-year students (not Master’s students) submit two reports from former teachers.
Step 3: If you are chosen for further consideration for the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship, FES will want to get to know you. A liaison lecturer from your department and a member of our selection committee will interview you. Here are some preparation suggestions for the interview selection process.
Step 4: The final decision regarding acceptance into one of their programs is made by the selection committee. The committee holds numerous meetings each year.

Scholarship Financial Award
- Up to 40 students are given Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship each year.
- They receive a monthly salary of 861 euros, and the cost of their health insurance is covered.
- Students with child or children are given a 276 EUR family allowance.
Up to 40 students may receive the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship each year to study for free in Germany. High-achieving students who are awarded Friedrich Germany Scholarships receive a comprehensive seminar program to help them improve their social and academic skills.
